Vendor Spotlight: Tags and Flags

Nadia Goodhart

If you have been to the Cariwest festival, you’ve probably seen the flag man. The cart is chock

full of flags from all over the world especially the Caribbean. What you probably don’t know, is

that the flag man is a dynamic duo – Clive and Diane of Tags and Flags.

Clive and Diane have been a fixture of Cariwest for the past 20 years. They travel from Toronto

to Edmonton every year. Their story of coming to Edmonton started with a lady by the name of

Judy Liddle. Judy Liddle, a great person and forever friend of Clive and Diane, was vending at Cariwest. Then she went to Caribana in Toronto to enjoy the festival, where she met Clive. They got talking and she got flags from Clive to take back to Alberta to sell. At the same time Judy told Clive about Edmonton's festival, Cariwest. With great excitement Clive asked Judy to get a spot and he would come up there and help sell flags with her. What Clive remembers the first year, was Churchill square was more of a park with a small patch of grass. Without Judy they might not have made it to Edmonton.

According to Diane, Judy was just an amazing person, she was also involved in Mas, vending

and a loyal happy participant. RIP Judy❤️

Tags and Flags attend other festivals from East to West in Canada, some places in the states, and some Caribbean islands. Depending on the festival schedules they try and fit in as many festivals as they can. Some of the festivals then attend: Fete Carib (now called Carimus festival) in Montreal, Canada Day celebrations, Vincy picnic at 1000 islands, Caribbean days festival at Coquitlam, Caribana Toronto, Cariwest, and Carifest to name a few.

The city of Edmonton has always been a warm and welcoming place for Clive and Diane. “Lots of people coming out to celebrate with us. Clive just knew it was a good opportunity to grow with your community.” In twenty years, they haven’t missed a year.

People are so used to seeing Clive they call him and know him as the flagmam. Clive takes his cart on the road and around the square. They carry as many flags and other merchandise as it can possibly hold! They started off carrying the big country name flags as they were the most common ones but now, they carry over 150 country flags, lanyards, keychains, hats, and bandanas. They are always adding to their inventory as the requests come in.

The best part about being at Cariwest is seeing everyone being friendly and welcoming. “The

people are from so many different areas and countries of the world. There are feelings of

enthusiasm, passion, excitement, it is a very joyous atmosphere!” “We have nothing but

gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of the festival.”

Please stop by Tags and Flags and say a hello to Clive and Diane. We love seeing you jump

and wave with your flag when dancing on the road and on the square knowing that you probably at one point in time got it from Tags and Flags.
