People of Cariwest

Milton aka Ellis Zaiffdeen has been a cornerstone of cultural preservation and community building for decades. His commitment to the Caribbean community goes far beyond participation. He has been a builder, a connector, and a champion for Caribbean identity in Western Canada with the formation of Western Carnival Development Association. Through his tireless efforts, he has helped countless families navigate the journey of immigrating to Alberta, offering not just guidance, but a sense of belonging and stability during what can often be a challenging transition. Many in our community can directly trace their successful settlement and integration back to Milton’s generosity, mentorship, and unwavering support. 

His influence is perhaps most vibrantly seen through his dedication to Trinidadian culture, particularly in the realms of music and mas-making. Milton has played a pivotal role in keeping the spirit of Carnival alive, ensuring that traditions are not only preserved but also passed on to future generations. As one of the pioneers of Cariwest, his work in mas has helped shape the visual identity of Cariwest, while his passion for Caribbean music has infused the festival with authenticity, energy, and pride. He has created spaces where culture is celebrated loudly and unapologetically and where young people can see themselves reflected and rooted in something meaningful. 

Milton’s legacy is woven into the fabric of Cariwest. Because of him and his wife Carol, his family is now leading the festival as a living expression of Caribbean heritage in Edmonton. His contributions have strengthened community bonds, elevated cultural awareness, and inspired countless individuals to embrace and celebrate their identity. Simply put, Milton has helped build a home away from home for many. 

At 82 years young, you can still find him in his garage bending wire, making ole talk, and ready to pour you a drink or two , and ready to fête.
